National and professional organisations advocate that employers should provide newly qualified midwives with a structured model of preceptorship. This is to increase confidence and competence, consequently strengthening recruitment and retention. Working alongside a named experienced preceptor further enhances self-belief and ability, although there is a shortage of evidence of this role being formalised within existing preceptorship models and the need and value of a structured approach can also be questioned.
