Symphysiotomy

Symphysiotomy is a surgical procedure to divide the cartilage of the pubic symphysis to widen the pelvis to facilitate delivery of the baby when there is a mechanical problem. It may be used (rarely in developed countries) in instances of cephalopelvic disproportion or shoulder dystocia when there is no option to perform a caesarean section.
