Dystocia

Literally 'difficult labour', associated with slowness or lack of progress. Possible causes include:

  • Contractions ineffective in dilating and effacing the cervix
  • Uncoordinated contractions where the two segments of the uterus fail to work in harmony
  • Contractions producing inadequate involuntary expulsion
  • Abnormalities of fetal presentation and position, the pelvis, the birth canal, and congenital abnormalities
